My Grandmother's Journals: June, 2000. Grandma has heart surgery the day before my move to Seattle!

My husband and my grandmother in 2012.
So much happened to my grandmother and me in June of 2000. While she was in the hospital discovering she needed open heart surgery, I was preparing to leave my life in California — my boyfriend, my job and everyone I knew — to start over in Seattle, a city where I knew no one, did not have a job, and had only visited once before when I flew up to find an apartment in one weekend.

And the day before I was to drive north with all my furniture and my cat, my sister called me in a panic to report that our grandmother was in the hospital after having heart surgery. “Don’t you check your messages?!” she exclaimed in a 5 a.m. phone call.

Since my sister was living in Phoenix and I was only about two hours away in Benicia, I drove down to Santa Cruz while the boyfriend I broke up said he and his friend would continuing loading the U-Haul truck for me, a truck they were already planning to drive to Seattle for me! (Long story short: His kindness and respect for me during my move and the following year proved what an incredibly decent person he was, and we eventually reunited and got married after he moved to Seattle a year later.)

But back to my grandmother, who never shared with me her health problems until she was already in the hospital, though she was struggling with pains and sleeplessness when I came down to spend the day with her after announcing I was moving two states away.

It’s a visit I remember vividly, especially us sitting on a bench at one my favorite places, Capitola Village, and enjoying some ice cream together. And how she graciously told me “I am glad you are spreading your wings,” even though she could not have been happy I was moving so far away.

The journal entries below are from the tiny notebooks my grandmother recorded all of her days in. See those notebooks and learn more about her incredibly full life in this video:

My Grandmother's Journals: April, 2000. "Washed sox. Part of nightgown."

Grandma in Paris in 1995.
Grandma in Paris: “Tried two stockings today for warmth. Found heater in bedroom. Was off! No wonder cold.

Welcome to the days of my grandmother, who wrote down each morning when she woke up, recorded everything she ate, noted any phone calls or mail she received, and reviewed any movie she went to see before settling down with the television and a crossword puzzle in bed.

The entries below are from April of 2000, when she was 84 and living alone in a trailer park. But don’t feel sorry for her, because she was the most fiercely independent person I have ever known, living in one of the most beautiful places I have ever known: Santa Cruz, California.

Another reason not to feel sorry for my grandmother is that she was in Paris that month — yes, still traveling overseas by herself well into her 80s! Paris was a city she loved so much she tried to go back every year, and this trip she got to save lots of money by staying in a friend's apartment. As a very frugal woman, this made my grandmother very happy.

On another trip she invited me along, when she was 80 and I was 25, and you can read both of our journal entries during that trip here.

See some of her journals and learn more about her long and full life in this video:

My Grandmother's Journals: January, 2000 "Cable out? Cut toe nails." Bonus: Quest for "Sweet and Lowdown" soundtrack

My grandmother's journal for January of 2000
Need some calm? Does a soothing routine of “usual breakfast, coffee at McDonald’s” and catching a movie before picking up a pot pie at KFC for dinner sound good?

Then spend a few days with my grandmother, who fastidiously wrote down each morning what time she woke up, then noted any phone calls, mail and what movie she went to see before settling down with the television and a crossword puzzle before bed.

That was cool.

Because I love reading her journals. And not just because she was my grandmother, but because I love all of the details this frugal and persnickety woman shared about her days. And maybe you will, too?

Eating with grandma in Paris.
The entries below are from January of 2000, when she was an 84-year-old woman living alone in a trailer park. But don’t feel sorry for her, because she wasn’t sad, and neither was her home — she was the most fiercely independent person I have ever known, living in one of the most beautiful places I have known: Santa Cruz, California.
(I wrote more about her life in this post)

Grandma didn’t fly anywhere this month (yes, she was still traveling overseas by herself in her 80s!) but she was planning another trip to Paris, a city she loved so much she visited it nearly every year. We even went to Paris together when she was 80 and I was 25, and you can read both of our journal entries during that trip here.

Or, you can see her journals and hear her life story in this video:

Grandma's letter mailed Jan. 29, 2000:

1/29/00

Hi: Enclosed is an addressed label to use to return the cassette, if you want to use this same envelope.

Tried Wherehouse, they were sold out — both of them, also they were $2 higher in price that this one from “Streetlight”, a large store on Pacific south of the Catalyst.

Do these CD’s have ‘coming attractions’ as the videos? Please run this first and if so can you leave them out?? The tape shows 60 minutes of time - I do not see the time on the CD. Can you time the CD, if it is more than 60 min, and you can get another tape, I will reimburse you. If less and there is space on tape, maybe you can play a tune for me - for posterity, if your machine has a mike.

Went to ‘End of the Affair’ - somehow it is missing something., Have seen both good & bad reviews. Greene was a devoted Catholic and this is semi-autobiographical ‘they’ say. Not worth $7.00, I wud say. Wait for video. Has many sexual scenes, realistic.

Thanks, and of course, you can keep the CD as I have no machine.

She signed this “Y” with a pen, then wrote below:

Did you see any of the Agassi-Sampras duel? I watched it at 12 midnight, 3 sets, at 2 o’clock after the tiebreak that Sampras won 7-0. I went to bed sure that S had won. !! Surprise!! It was a great match. Also today’s womens-Hingis petulant-almost cried. Some say she is ‘only 19’ as excuse-but so are the Williams sisters & Kournakova, they do not pout when losing.
